Illustration

While illustration has always been in the past the creative partner of text – literary or journalistic – today it serves as a means of expression for new creators, who find in contemporary galleries a door open to their talent. The Portuguese illustration gains new form, giving shape to the author’s work, in original drawings or limited edition screen prints.

Mariana, a Miserável

According to herself, Mariana Santos is a “not awarded winner illustrator” from Porto. The artist is characterised by her interventionist spirit, but also by the humour and reinvention of trivial and bizarre moments of everyday life.

With a degree in graphic design, she started her path as a freelancer, until she reached the boiling point. That was when she decided to go back to the starting point, when she used to draw for fun, without limitations. She created the character “Mariana, the Miserable” as an alter ego of her own reflections and disappointments and, above all, showing the ability to laugh at herself.

Mariana is in the genesis of the author illustration movement in Porto, having participated in numerous solo or group exhibitions. She was also the author of murals, fanzines and her own blog, where she shares episodes of the life of “misery, pity and rock n’roll”.

Breaking with the rules of classical dance, the only rule for contemporary dance is freedom. The freedom to create, to express, to connect with rhythm, space and time.

A ballet dancer since the age of 5, Cristina always had a very own vision of art, finding in choreography the creative autonomy she values so much. Her works UM [unimal] and FM [featuring mortuum] were seen around the country and the world. In addition to working on her own, she created a platform for curating shows and promoting choreographers and dancers, called Bacteria.

Out of the Box wines

Orange and amphora are the first wines to inaugurate the concept Poças Fora da Série (Out of the Box). The centenary Port and DOC Douro wine company maintains the creative attitude and reuses artifacts and techniques of the past to produce the wines of the future.

Poças Fora da Série Ânfora 2018

The artifact aroused the curiosity of the Poças employees. They had never seen anything like that. The porous clay amphorae where one of the new Out of the Box wines of the centenary Port and DOC Douro wines fermented and aged will be the first in the Douro and are not coated in pitch.

Therefore, they should not be confused with the carved wines from Alentejo, so popular nowadays, with an oxidative profile, explains the Poças enology team, led by Jorge Pintão: “What we sought with Poças Fora da Série Ânfora 2018 was to adapt the well-known botijo mechanism, where there is a concentration by micro-evaporation, and that makes the amphorae stay cool during all stages of winemaking”. This simple effect, which keeps the water always fresh, contributes to the wine’s fresh and mineral profile and to the good concentration thereof.

The use of the amphora also reflects the artisanal intention of the project, as well as the search for less interventive oenological techniques. The attitude is the same for the second new wine Fora da Série da Poças, called Orange 2018, made from white grapes, with skin maceration.

Poças Fora da Série Orange 2018

“In Orange Fora da Série we also use a mix of ancient and modern techniques, using native yeasts and a very simple clarification, with natural products. It is a wine for the international market, intersecting the natural concept of orange wines with the traditional tanning”, contextualizes André Barbosa, a member of the Poças oenology team.

The search for less intervention is, moreover, a constant concern at Poças, adds Pedro Pintão, the company’s marketing and communication manager: “Our farms in Douro, except for Quinta das Quartas, have an integrated production since 2003. On the other hand, we constantly care for reducing the intervention in the cellar”.
